FIRST EDITION, first issue with the engraved portrait of Jan Maurits, Prince of Nassau, of this classic book on America.
The fine illustrations include maps of America, New England, Virginia and Florida after Blaeu and others, and one of the earliest engraved views of New York. The portraits are of the early explorers (Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, and Pizarro) as well as of the last Incan emperor Atahualpa and the Aztec emperor Montezuma. Much of the second half of the volume is devoted to Brazil, where the Dutch were deeply involved for decades in the XVIIth century.
The text engraving on p. 213 shows the crowning of Sir Francis Drake by the California Native Americans.
